Part of World War I and the British Mandate in Palestine. Photographs show people and events in Palestine (present day Israel and the West Bank) and Jordan between 1917 and 1926, focusing on World War I, the British capture and occupation of Jerusalem, and the early British Mandate period.

During 1917, Brits general Edmund Allenby got into the Old City via the Jaffa Gate, giving short speech at the famous Tower of David. Allenby went into the city on foot as a show of deep respect for that city and a hope to avoid comparison with the previous Kaiser’s entry during 1898. The British razed other buildings adjoining that city wall in 1944 in an effort to preserve Jerusalem’s historic panoramas.
